Solo exhibition by Gijs Assmann at the Luther Museum Amsterdam

From February 2nd to March 8th, 2026, the Luther Museum Amsterdam presents the solo exhibition " On the 8th Day – Mary: Faith & Grace" by visual artist Gijs Assmann . The exhibition is part of the "Art in the Church Hall" series , in which contemporary artists engage in dialogue with the Lutheran tradition, religious heritage, and current life questions.

In four new, site-specific artworks, Assmann explores the meaning of Mary within Protestantism. He doesn't place her on a pedestal, but shows her as a person: as an example of faith, receptivity, and grace.

Mary in the Lutheran tradition

Gijs Assmann breaks the silence surrounding Mary in the Protestant tradition. Inspired by Martin Luther's writings and the ideas of Dutch theologian Arnold Huygen, he presents Mary not as a saint, but as an example of faith, humility, and a recipient of grace. His intimate intervention in the former church hall and the museum's historical style rooms invites contemplation and dialogue.
