Art that takes you to the deep sea
With Deep Seeing Currents, artist Olafur Eliasson creates an immersive installation about life in the deep ocean. As soon as you step into the space, darkness envelops you. Sounds of whale behavior, hydrothermal vents, and human activity at sea fill the room. You feel the vibrations throughout your entire body. In this way, you experience what it feels like to be at great depths in the water.
Light and sound as means of experience
Above and around you, lights flash that seem to descend like marine snow: the organic and inorganic particles indispensable for life in the deep sea. The immersive sound of the installation is created via 4DSOUND, a technology that places sound three-dimensionally in space.
Location in the ARTIS Aquarium
Deep Seeing Currents is located in the ARTIS Aquarium in Amsterdam. As an environment, the aquarium offers a fitting context for this work: the exhibition space directly connects the art to the theme of the ocean and the vulnerability of marine life.
