VOC Café - Schreierstoren

The VOC Café is a bar located in the basement of the Schreierstoren. In the 17th and 18th centuries, VOC (Dutch East India Company) crewmen come to this tower to board flat-bottomed boats for the Dutch island of Texel. Sailors heading to the East Indies would wait in Texel for favourable winds. Legend has it that the tower’s name (weeping tower) came from the crying women that bid their husbands farewell here.
