Image from © Foppe Schut

In a program featuring only wind instruments, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble explores love in all its forms through works by Richard Strauss and Schönberg: from romantic longing to redemption. Flemish writer Maud Vanhauwaert translates the story of Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht into the present day. With playful, astute observations and unexpected twists, she makes love and vulnerability palpable.

NBE examines love

With Richard Strauss and Arnold Schönberg, the NBE explores love: romantic longing and the confrontation with harsh reality. The light, graceful Serenade and the more elaborate Suite by a young Strauss stand in contrast to Schönberg’s penetrating Verklärte Nacht , a musical interpretation of a nocturnal confession full of guilt, forgiveness, and inner transformation.

Exciting search for new colors

For the first time, the NBE performs an entire program with only wind instruments. Geert van Keulen, one of the founders of the NBE 65 years ago, ingeniously arranged Verklärte Nacht for the ensemble. An exciting quest for new colors and for what lies hidden behind the original orchestrations. The Flemish writer Maud Vanhauwaert translates the story of Verklärte Nacht into the present. With playful, astute observations and unexpected twists, she makes love and vulnerability palpable.
