Simply Quartet

An ensemble that brings music to life, the press once remarked about the Simply Quartet – a compliment could not be greater. This Vienna-based string quartet is young, but has long since lived up to the label 'promising'. Duly noted, for tonight, following previous performances in the Kleine Zaal, the musicians are playing their first concert in the World Famous String Quartets series. The musicality of the quartet is heartwarming and equally audible in every idiom. Today, the former Rising Stars take on works by Haydn, Mozart, and Mendelssohn.

Mozart and Mendelssohn

Mozart's String Quartet in D , KV 421, is one of his six Haydn quartets. This piece is, in Mozart's own words, 'the fruit of diligent zeal and perseverance'. The manuscript is full of deletions, unusual for Mozart. Yet he succeeded in producing a masterpiece that was highly regarded by his older colleague Haydn. Mendelssohn, a younger colleague and someone who adored Mozart as a quartet composer, adopts his musical efficiency. In his String Quartet in D , he adds lyricism and sparkling virtuosity. Almost sixty years separate these pieces, but the kinship is easily heard. Listen for yourself!
