Menahem Pressler, once the driving force behind the renowned Beaux Arts Trio, stated that Trio Zadig consists of three extraordinarily gifted instrumentalists who are, at the same time, truly searching musicians – a great compliment. In 2021, Trio Zadig made its debut in the Kleine Zaal, and since then, the French trio has returned successfully several times. Zadig: the players derived their name from Voltaire's character Zadig – Hebrew for 'the righteous' and Arabic for 'the truthful'. Trio Zadig regularly performs music in schools, hospitals, and prisons, reflecting their social commitment and belief in the transformative power of music.

Schönberg's Transfigured Night

It seems a daring undertaking to perform a work for six strings in a version for piano trio. Yet there is added value: the different timbre of the piano highlights the tensions evoked by the emotions, while the violin and cello lend extra relief to the dialogue. And there is a dialogue, in the dramatic poem by Richard Drehmel that inspired Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht . A woman tells her lover that she is pregnant – but not by him! Where tonality in Schönberg’s late Romanticism almost disintegrates, the two protagonists come together during a moonlit walk. Magnificent music that expresses both conflict and reconciliation – how beautiful is that?
