Founded in 2003, Quatuor Modigliani is a welcome guest on major world stages. The French string players perform music ranging from the standard repertoire to commissioned compositions and are praised for their balance, transparent sound, and the stylistic certainty with which they play. The quartet is back in Amsterdam: the Kleine Zaal has been familiar territory for Quatuor Modigliani since 2005. The four share the stage with Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva, winner of the renowned Chopin Competition. Her style? Fiery and expressive.

Ravel, Debussy and Shostakovich

Can you apply irony to Schubert's pure music? In his Valses nobles et sentimentales, Ravel elegantly demonstrates that it is possible. He draws on Schubert's Viennese waltzes and places his own nostalgia in perspective. Debussy cast aside the formal rules of the string quartet and followed his musical instinct. With a freely floating cyclical theme, he liberated French music from German heaviness. In the midst of the Stalinist terror, Shostakovich received the Stalin Prize for his Piano Quintet —the ambiguity of the work completely escaped the regime. In this program, a sense of perspective characterizes all the works, without ever undermining their musical expressiveness.
