The young pianist Nikola Meeuwsen (2002) was the first Dutch musician to win the renowned Queen Elisabeth Competition. During the final of this competition, he gave a powerful interpretation of Sergei Prokofiev's energetic and virtuosic Second Piano Concerto . With Strauss in the Alps

From the same period dates Richard Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie , a work for a massive orchestral ensemble. Long walks in the Alps inspired Strauss to write this symphonic poem, which depicts a mountain hike in more than twenty interconnected scenes. Strauss brings the landscape to life musically; between sunrise and sunset, he shows lovely meadows and a beautiful view from the mountaintop, but also dangerous moments and thunderstorms during the descent.
