Sibelius' Violin Concerto

Sibelius composed his Violin Concerto between 1902 and 1905. The first performance was a disaster; the dreamed-of soloist failed to show up, and a last-minute replacement could not handle the piece. Sibelius withdrew the concerto and thoroughly reworked it. The revised version premiered in Berlin, with Richard Strauss conducting, and began a triumphant tour that continues to this day. In this early work, one can still hear something of the late Romantic Russian tradition, with phrasing reminiscent of Tchaikovsky. Sibelius's impressions of nature are far removed from Tchaikovsky's dramatic Fifth Symphony , also on the music stands tonight, but both pieces follow a clear emotional curve.
