The young Belgian saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande draws inspiration from the visual art of Mark Rothko. His new music sounds like a symphony of colors and sounds. For his recent album, "Fields of Color," he delved into the life and work of American painter Mark Rothko. Despite being colorblind himself, Van den Brande became fascinated by Rothko's abstract fields of color from a young age. The Matthias Van den Brande Quartet will perform at the Bimhuis.

Fields of Color

Just like music, they express emotion, which is a huge source of inspiration for the Belgian saxophonist. Mutual friendship and a strong musical bond form the foundation for the Matthias Van den Brande Quartet. Saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande has lived in many different places, from his native Belgium to the United States. His melodic compositions are rooted in the jazz tradition yet sound contemporary and accessible. For this project, he expanded his trio with trumpeter Jean-Paul Estiévenart. The album 'Fields of Color' was released earlier this year on Fresh Sound Records.
