Masterpieces Unboxed

How is the music structured, what is it about, what story does the composer want to tell, and who or what served as sources of inspiration? In Masterpieces Unboxed, we dissect masterpieces of chamber music. Presenter Anne-Maartje Lemereis, together with the ADAM Quartet, double bassist Gabriel Abad Varela, and harpsichordist Emmanuel Frankenberg, dives into Vivaldi's Four Seasons . They take you along hidden details and surprising twists, with live excerpts that cast the work in a new light. After the 'unboxing,' all seasons are performed.

Vivaldi's The Four Seasons

One of the most delightful pieces in classical music is Vivaldi's The Four Seasons . These four short violin concertos from 1723 portray seasons full of hope, blossoming, and growth, but also a world frozen in winter cold. For each season, Vivaldi wrote a short sonnet that serves more or less as a script: the singing birds, the barking dog, and the thunderstorm—they all reappear in the sound. This musical representation makes the pastoral work one of the most evocative pieces of music ever.
