Mahlers Symfonie nr. 6 door Paavo Järvi en het Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich

Powerful and expressive performances characterize the collaboration between Paavo Järvi and his Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. They have pledged their hearts to Mahler: orchestra and conductor are working on a symphonic cycle for CD. And so, in the concert hall as well; tonight they are bringing the Sixth. Doom lurks everywhere in this symphony, and for anyone who wants to see the man with the hammer in action live, this work is an absolute must.

Mahler's Symphony No. 6

Mahler's Sixth Symphony , the 'Tragic', saw the light of day at Lake Wörthersee, where Gustav, his wife Alma, and their young daughter spent the summers of 1903 and 1904. In this idyllic setting, Mahler wrote a symphony that broke through the boundaries of music. He employed an unprecedentedly large orchestra; his beloved cowbells were not absent either. Doom lurks everywhere in this haunting piece; perhaps Mahler foresaw his future tragedy? A moving document, this Sixth —and an absolute must for anyone who wants to see the man with the hammer in live action.

Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich

When discussing the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and chief conductor Paavo Järvi, critics frequently mention Järvi's 'powerful and expressive performances' and 'liveliness'. The Estonian Järvi, who learned his craft from his father, has been chief conductor of the Zurich orchestra since 2019. After years of dreaming, they began a Mahler cycle on CD in early 2025. They will record all the symphonies and, as today, perform them live. Expect powerful expression in this fateful Mahler from Switzerland.
