After the intermission, Respighi's colorful declaration of love to ancient Rome, Pini di Roma, will be performed. Children playing at the Villa Borghese, a nocturnal scene with a real nightingale, Roman legions marching out... The Italian composer pulled out all the stops with the orchestra to conjure up images. The work has deservedly remained popular; Jaap van Zweden is eager to bring this music to the stage.
