Handel's Messiah

Since the first performance at the Concertgebouw in 1946, the Netherlands Handel Society has performed the magnificent masterpiece Messiah more than 150 times. Handel wrote his 'Grand Musical Entertainment' in just 24 days, based on biblical texts collected by his friend Charles Jennens. In this work, the choir plays a central role as commentator, just as in ancient Greek tragedies. Contrapuntal reworkings of themes go hand in hand with chordal declamations of monumental grandeur, as in the beloved 'Hallelujah'.
