Hagen Quartet
For over forty years, they have traveled to international stages and released some fifty albums: the musicians of the Hagen Quartet have set a standard and are a source of inspiration for the younger generation of string quartets. In addition to teaching, they tour the globe from their home base in Salzburg. "When the Hagen Quartet plays, you get the feeling that every note, every gesture has been carefully considered," according to The New York Times . The Hagens are currently on their farewell tour. During this first of two farewell concerts, they will perform quartets by Beethoven, Webern, and Schubert.
Beethoven, Schubert and Webern
Beethoven's String Quartet, Opus 95, nicknamed "Serioso," is a key work in the transition from the "Classical" to the "Romantic Beethoven." Beethoven is said to have composed the short, compact quartet while suffering from unrequited love, hence the work's somber mood. The nickname "Rosamunde" for Schubert's String Quartet , D. 804, comes from a theme in Schubert's incidental music in the Andante. All movements of this quartet begin softly, interspersed with tempo changes and strong dynamic contrasts.
In the finale, Hungary makes an appearance with ornamentation from folk music. This subtle and graceful quartet seems to end gently, until Schubert concludes with two daring chords. The Hagen Quartet connects Beethoven and Schubert with a quartet by Webern from 1905, an early work that was only rediscovered years after the composer's death. The single-movement work consists of three distinct sections, for which Webern drew inspiration from the 1898 triptych Life-Nature-Death by the Italian painter Giovanni Segantini.
