Die 12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker

Die 12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker are returning to Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. Although the most famous cello ensemble in the world is renowned for its arrangements of French chansons, Beatles songs and tangos, they have also commissioned new work from more than fifty composers. Among others, Tan Dun, Brett Dean, Iannis Xenakis and Kaija Saariaho have written specifically for them. On 1 November, they will give two concerts. The 18:30 concert is sold out, but a few tickets are still available for the 21:00 concert.

A choir of 12 cellists

In 1974, Jean Françaix composed his four-part Aubade especially for ‘Die 12’, a light-hearted and carefree piece. Fratres by Arvo Pärt is one of the most beloved compositions of the 20th century and exists in all possible versions and instrumentations. Pärt himself created a version for 12 cellos. A new composition by Giovanni Sollima was a long-cherished wish of the twelve cellists, and with Dust on the Bow that wish is finally being fulfilled.
