Regarding Magnus Lindberg's Third Piano Concerto (2022), the Wall Street Journal wrote: 'A work that evokes the greatness of others, while simultaneously creating a sound world entirely its own.' In his lively, inventive, and virtuos virtuoso solo concerto, Ravel, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff look over Lindberg's shoulder, yet they do let him have his way… Together with two Scandinavian orchestras, the NTR ZaterdagMatinee has commissioned a composition from this Finnish composer. Lindberg, a pianist himself, is writing a concerto for two pianos and orchestra for Lucas and Arthur Jussen. They have the honor of premiering this double concerto three times: in Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands!

Snake and bird

Lindberg's concerto is flanked by works in which an animal takes center stage. In Sensamayá , Silvestre Revueltas depicts the ritual slaughter of a snake. The continuous pulse, the irregular rhythms, and the ceremonial and ritual character evoke associations with Stravinsky's Sacre . From Stravinsky, the ballet The Firebird is performed, which premiered at the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1910, three years before Sacre . Usually, the suite from this ballet is played, but today the complete and original version is performed!
