Mendelssohn

The versatile Jörg Widmann is one of the most important musicians of our time. The Concertgebouw Orchestra is proud that he is coming to lead the orchestra. In addition to his own work, Widmann conducts music by his predecessor Felix Mendelssohn. The concert opens with the atmospheric Overture 'Die Hebriden' , inspired by the magic of the Scottish islands. During his British adventure, Mendelssohn also began work on his Fifth Symphony , nicknamed 'Reformation'. The Jewish-Protestant composer incorporated Lutheran and Catholic elements into this plea for reconciliation and tolerance. Above all, it is beautiful music that deserves to be played and heard much more often.

Jörg Widmann

Jörg Widmann himself plays his Fantasy for clarinet – and in the virtuosic, very personal Second Violin Concerto, his sister, top violinist Carolin Widmann, to whom the work is also dedicated, shines.
