Beethoven, Brahms, and Strauss

After Beethoven's death 200 years ago, other musicians cherished his musical legacy. You will hear late works by three of them. Brahms was already retired when he discovered the clarinet and composed the autumnal Clarinet Quintet . Ernst von Dohnányi's Sextet is the final piece of an impressive chamber music oeuvre, and Richard Strauss's Andante was not published until 25 years after his death, in 1973. All have helped keep Beethoven's work alive and relevant – Brahms as a composer, Dohnányi as a pianist, Strauss as a conductor. A late work by Beethoven himself will also be performed: the Grosse Fuge , originally the final movement of his thirteenth string quartet and a crowning achievement of his oeuvre.
