If a piece is titled 'Andante cantabile' (calm and lyrical), you can expect music of remarkable melodic simplicity. The most famous Andante cantabile is the second movement of Tchaikovsky's First String Quartet . The composer was rightly proud that the work moved the great writer Tolstoy to tears. Other beloved Andante cantabiles can be found in the 'Serenade' string quartet, often attributed to Haydn, the duet for low strings with which opera composer Rossini surprised everyone, a short, florid work by the Czech Foerster, and the far too rarely performed String Quintet in C by Beethoven.
