Classical Highlights

Together with top musicians and host Camiel Jansen, we explore what makes the recognizable tunes of the great classical masterpieces so beautiful and special. Tonight, you can enjoy true violin classics. Stella Chen brings Hungarian temperament to Ravel’s Tzigane , she plays arrangements for violin and piano of beloved works by Gershwin and Chopin, and in Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie, she seeks out Spanish atmospheres. Stella is accompanied by pianist Arthur Hinnewinkel. Both have an impressive track record; for instance, they were both finalists in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition!

Violin Classics

Tonight you will hear how the violin can constantly change character. Sometimes the violin sounds warm and dreamy, as in Amy Beach’s Romance and Chopin’s moving Nocturne . Moments later, it swings through Gershwin’s Preludes , where classical music and jazz meet. In Ravel’s colorful Tzigane and Waxman’s spectacular Carmen Fantasie , virtuosity takes center stage: the violin dances, sings, and shines. Tonight, Stella Chen demonstrates why the violin has been one of the most beloved instruments for centuries: versatile, expressive, and full of personality.
