In 2018 he formed a trio under his own name, with contemporary Larry Grenadier on double bass and the younger tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III. Their mastery gives Stewart plenty of room to shape his own compositions. The album 'Band Menu' (released in 2018) sounds subdued and melodic on the one hand, inventive and rich in form on the other. Bill Stewart has often performed at the Bimhuis in guitarist John Scofield's successful bands. He also played in the organ trio with Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein, in Chris Potter's band, but also three times before with his own trio. He knows Larry Grenadier from the bands of Scofield and Pat Metheny. Grenadier is best known from the Brad Mehldau Trio. Walter Smith III played with Roy Haynes and Ambrose Akinmusire, among others.
