Canto ostinato

Canto ostinato is composed of 200 sections – together they form the building blocks of the composition: not a linear story with a fixed beginning and end, but rather a series of modules that can be placed one after another to create a meditative flow. It is up to the piano duo to determine how often each of the 200 sections is repeated. This results in a performance that is not entirely fixed, but unfolds on the spot: 'We let ourselves be inspired by the moment, the atmosphere, and the audience,' say Piano Duo Scholtes & Janssens, 'making every concert a unique experience.'

Since their inception in 2003, Pianoduo Scholtes & Janssens has developed into one of the most prominent piano duos of their generation. Their debut at Carnegie Hall was praised as 'it could just as well have been 25 or 30 fingers, so grand and fused was their sound. Sublime duo in top form'. The duo is a prize winner of a dozen (inter)national competitions and has performed in more than 30 countries worldwide, from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to Kioi Hall in Tokyo. Simeon ten Holt's Canto ostinato is one of the duo's signature pieces.
