From street art to paving stones

Tribute to Berlage

Discover the Rivierenbuurt in a new way with the Berlage Wanderwall, an initiative of the Urban Discovery Foundation. This unique street art route passes four old transformer substations (electricity buildings) that have been given a new life as canvases for street art. The artworks are inspired by 'Mijn Indische Reis' (1923), the travel diary of architect HP Berlage. Five young artists with Indonesian and Moluccan roots combined spoken word, stories, and illustrations into one colourful route. Together, their works form a modern tribute to Berlage, who always viewed architecture and art as a single entity.

The Urban Discovery Foundation wants to connect the four artworks with each other and with the neighbourhood. Therefore, together with local partners such as Dynamo Welzijnsorganisatie, Combiwell Jeugdwerk, and Museum de Dageraad, they organise drawing workshops throughout the year. Here, residents can create their own version of Berlage's travel story.

Today you can choose from two activities. Join a guided tour along the entire route and hear more about the artworks and the stories behind them from artist Rizky Kalebos. Or participate in a drawing workshop at one of the transformer substations on the Amstelkade. Be inspired by the neighbourhood and by Berlage's stories. What do you see, what do you hear, and what catches your eye? Create your own design, and who knows, your drawing might one day become a real paving stone in the Rivierenbuurt. This is how the Berlage Wanderwall continues to grow, connecting art and the neighbourhood.
