Art house

The Movies is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam (although De Uitkijk also has a shot at that title) and a household name for Amsterdammers. The film theater is located on the Haarlemmerdijk and has four cinemas, all furnished in a classic Art Deco style. The Movies mainly shows arthouse films, documentaries and the better Hollywood productions.

The Movies was founded in 1912 under the name Cinema Tavenu. Two years later, the name was changed to Cinema Hollandia and the current name was chosen in the 1970s.
