VlasPlein

Participate in the sowing symposium (English-language event). Something is growing on Zeeburgereiland. Curious local residents, experts, and interested parties are cordially invited to visit, discover, and experience the compact sowing symposium in the Sluisbuurt on Zeeburgereiland. Location: between Zuiderzeeweg and Rudi van Danzigstraat 1.
What is going to happen?
It will be a moment when a large circle of flax is sown, presentations are given, and ideas are exchanged on how art, ecology, and urban development can meet and inspire each other in a new city district. The Sluisbuurt is a rapidly growing area, making this a particularly interesting moment to explore together what can emerge here.
Flax
Flax is one of the oldest cultivated plants and was used as animal feed and to improve soil quality. The fibers are used to make linen for canvases and the seeds to produce linseed oil, which is traditionally used as a base for paint.
When the flax in the Sluisbuurt is fully grown, it is pressed into linseed oil and applied to benches, streetlights, and trash cans in public spaces using a traditional painting technique that imitates wood and other materials. In this way, these everyday objects acquire a special appearance.
Sowing Symposium
Just like the neighborhood, the flax needs time to grow. Until the harvest in the autumn of this year, you can watch it grow and bloom, and you are very welcome to join us for a picnic.
The Sowing Symposium marks the beginning of the temporary artwork Vlasveld, and your presence is highly appreciated. The full program, including the speakers, will be announced shortly.
Location: outdoors, in the Sluisbuurt, Zeeburgereiland (Amsterdam), on the stretch between tram stop Zuiderzeeweg and Rudi van Dantzigstraat 1, at the coordinates 52°22'24.3"N 4°57'40.6"E.
