Xanadu (1980) is a musical fantasy film centering on the logic of a dream. Olivia Newton-John plays Kira, one of the nine Muses from Greek mythology who descends to earth to inspire people. She meets Sonny Malone, a frustrated artist, and together with washed-up bandleader Danny McGuire, he opens the nightclub Xanadu. The film combines roller disco, neon colors, and soft-focus romance into a stylish whole.

The soundtrack is a collaboration between Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John herself. The songs give the film its recognizable sound: optimistic, synthetic, and full of energy.
