Psychological horror about isolation and mental derailment
Loosely based on Stephen King's novel, it follows Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), who, under the influence of isolation, creative frustration, and supernatural forces, slowly spirals into violent derangement, to the growing fear of his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son, Danny (Danny Lloyd). Kubrick's meticulous framing, fluid Steadicam movements, and chilling use of sound create an atmosphere of unease palpable in every hallway and shadow. Nicholson's frenzied performance and Duvall's raw vulnerability are iconic, as is the film's ambiguous interweaving of the paranormal and the psychological. Both a horror landmark and an enduring enigma, the film continues to resonate decades later.
