A love story between desire and destruction
Happy Together is a film by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai. The story follows Ho Po-wing and Lai Yiu-fai, two men who travel to Argentina together hoping for a new beginning. What follows is a turbulent relationship filled with longing, jealousy, and broken promises. The film alternates between moments of deep connection and painful estrangement.
Image and atmosphere as narrative language
Cinematographer Christopher Doyle films Buenos Aires in a way that reflects the characters' emotional states. The footage alternates between black and white and color, and the jazzy soundtrack gives the film a dreamy, melancholic atmosphere. Wong Kar-wai uses rhythm and silence as powerfully as dialogue to convey the sense of loneliness and closeness.
Layered context surrounding the handover of Hong Kong
Wong shot the film on the eve of the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997. This historical backdrop adds another layer to the story: the characters are not only searching for love, but also for a place where they can be themselves. The film won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
