Exhibition
The main character is B., who, after more than four months of immigration detention at Schiphol Airport and a stay in Ter Apel, is currently undergoing asylum proceedings. By featuring B. as a guide/narrator, Farifteh turns our perspective on asylum procedures on its head: instead of talking about asylum seekers, she lets us, quite literally, listen to them. In this way, Farifteh holds up a mirror to the visitor. This exhibition isn't about them, but about us.
Tina Farifteh
Tina Farifteh is a photographer, filmmaker, and artist whose work explores the impact of power structures on the lives of ordinary people. She previously created the audiovisual installation The Flood (2021) and the short documentary Kitten or Refugee? (2023), which won the Silver Camera in the Storytelling category (2024).
Document Netherlands Junior
Document Nederland Junior is also on display in the Photo Gallery at the same time as Document Nederland. Document Nederland Junior is an annual photo competition for secondary school students and vocational students. The theme is the same as the photo assignment. Ten selected young people received a masterclass led by Tina Farifteh and experts from the Rijksmuseum. The photos of the ten young people are on display in the second room of the Photo Gallery.
50 Years of Document Netherlands
Since 1975, the Rijksmuseum has organized the annual photo commission Document Nederland, for which a Dutch photographer is asked to capture a current social theme.
