Transcending Beethoven

No one doubts that Beethoven's music is timeless. The composer is mentioned in the same breath as Bach and Mozart and belongs among the greatest musical minds Western music has produced. StarkLinnemann has taken on the challenge of transforming Beethoven's music into the sound idiom of the 21st century. They previously did this successfully with complete works by Liszt, Chopin, and Mussorgsky. Transcending Beethoven now consists of three intriguing projects in which Beethoven's Cello Sonata opus 69, the Eroica Symphony , and the Piano Sonata opus 28 (which you will hear tonight) have been transformed into robust jazz compositions. StarkLinnemann succeeds in preserving the soul of the music while simultaneously translating it to contemporary standards. The form of the pieces remains intact, but hip rhythms and modern harmonies are added. And, entirely in the spirit of Beethoven, adventurous improvisations are naturally included.

Since 2012, StarkLinnemann has been operating at the intersection of jazz, classical music, and world music. The Dutch group, led by pianist Paul Stark and drummer Jonas Linnemann, creates music that transcends time and genre. Like no other, they are able to connect music-historical eras with geographically determined differences in musical styles. This style, which they themselves call 'Universal Crossover Music', has been very positively received by domestic and international press.
