Hugo Wolf set forty-six poems from the Italian Songbook by poet Paul Heyse to music. He chose primarily short, expressive poems from these translations of Italian poetry and arranged them into a universal male-female story. The man sings of her beauty, the woman presents practical matters and complaints about the man's behavior. The traditional love divide between the sexes is played out in ever-stunning songs.

Louise Alder, originally scheduled to perform, has had to cancel due to her pregnancy. She will be replaced by Austrian mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert.
