Every month on a Sunday afternoon, the Plein Theater presents a programme full of discoveries. The first four editions this autumn showcase a broad spectrum: from a cappella to microtonal sounds, from a juggling concert to a masterpiece by Kurtág. This Sunday afternoon: Microtonale klankwerelden door Trio Scala.
With a penchant for experiment and innovation, the Plein Theater presents Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. Brand-new compositions by leading musicians form the ingredients of this concert series for contemporary music.
Ensemble scala is a Dutch ensemble that specialises in microtonal music: music that uses more tones than the usual twelve tones per octave. The ensemble was founded in 2010 by the Huygens-Fokker Stichting and explores the rich sound world of alternative tuning systems, with special attention to the 31-tone system of the famous Fokker-orgel.
During this concert, Ensemble scala is represented by three of its musicians: Stefan Gerritsen (microtonal guitar), Anne Veinberg (96-tone piano/keys) and Ere Lievonen (31-tone organ). Together, they take the audience on a journey of discovery through surprising timbres, new harmonies and the fascinating possibilities of microtonality.
