Nationaal Cello Concours First Round

After a pre-selection, fifteen young cello talents get the chance to present themselves to an international jury in three rounds. In the free-to-attend First Round at Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, all fifteen participants play the same pieces. After ten competitions, for the first time, there is no work by Luigi Boccherini on the programme, but rather by the Italian composer-cellist Giovanni Battista Cirri. David Popper was also a cellist who, in addition to the mandatory etudes for every cello student, wrote a considerable number of very charming recital pieces.

The most exciting part of the Cello Biënnale

For the 2022 Cello Biënnale, Karmit Fadael composed the atmospheric Sēo for cello and low strings. Curious to see if she can also make the cello virtuously squeak, scream, and hum!

The jury of the Nationaal Cello Concours 2026 consists of: Sven Arne Tepl, Chu Yi-Bing, Jan Ype Nota, Giovanni Gnocchi, Ildikó Szabó, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Liza Ferschtman and Patty Hamel (secretary).
