Mahler's Symphony No. 1

Mahler's First Symphony is an experience; there is not only much to hear, but also much to see. At the beginning, three trumpeters play hunting signals backstage, then they sneak softly onto the stage. They didn't sit in the canteen for too long; it really is written that way in the score! This piece, lasting just under an hour, is program music without text; we hear klezmer music, even Father Jacob makes an appearance. After the premiere in Budapest in 1889, a critic called the piece a parody of a symphony. Mahler completely reworked his debut, removing a movement and adjusting countless passages. After a number of performances, Mahler's epic narrative style managed to convince the audience. Today, the First Symphony is one of Mahler's most beloved works.

Janine Jansen plays Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1

Shostakovich's four-movement First Violin Concerto , one of the greatest works for violin and orchestra of the last century, is a dramatic piece. The first movement is an ominous opening; the Scherzo sounds satirical. After a monumental Passacaglia with a long cadenza, the raw final movement sketches the gates of hell. No violinist is better suited for this than Janine Jansen, who, with her powerful stage presence and charisma, takes the listener along on a compelling journey. In her emotional power, she is accompanied by the Munich Philharmonic under their newly appointed chief conductor Lahav Shani.
