Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena - Nicolas Champion
De Profundis - Nicolas Champion
Tulerunt Dominum meum - Josquin De Prez
Rabbouni - Jeroen Spitteler
Gregorian Repertoire
In the midst of the Passion season, Ensemble Hermes sings a program about Mary Magdalene, the woman who first saw the resurrected Jesus, a woman often dismissed as a prostitute, but also revered as a saint.
Nicolas Champon (ca. 1475-1533) wrote a mass in a lush polyphonic style about her encounter with Jesus on that very first Easter day. This mass was preserved for centuries in the choirbooks of 's-Hertogenbosch and is now finally being performed again. You will also hear Champion's De Profundis , formerly attributed to Josquin. Definitely by Josquin (ca.1450-1521) is the monumental Easter motet Tulerunt Dominum Meum.
The program is supplemented with Gregorian repertoire. Music about Mary Magdalene from our time is featured in Spitteler's Easter motet for women's choir, composed in 2024.
During this concert the singers will sing from the original hand manuscripts and, as in the ancient practice, gathered round a central music stand specially designed for Hermes.
