Anyone who has ever heard the brass section of the Concertgebouw Orchestra knows: this is the absolute top. Rumbering with lust, yet also velvety soft and round: Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, a new arrangement of music from the musical The Phantom of the Opera, and Shostakovich's Jazz Suite are tailor-made for them.

Brass players of the Concertgebouw Orchestra

The phenomenal brass ensemble of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is internationally acclaimed for the 'golden edge' in their sound and their broad musical palette. They are unparalleled in their virtuosity and stylistic flexibility. The orchestra's trumpets, horns, trombones, and tuba have been performing together as a group worldwide for more than ten years. This morning, they present a program in which movement and stillness go hand in hand.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker

Festive, sparkling, elegant, and bursting with energy: the music of The Nutcracker has it all. It seems as if Pyotr Tchaikovsky was made for composing this Christmas ballet. With the melodic richness, the orchestral colors, and the natural elegance of his music, Tchaikovsky set a new—and towering—standard for ballet music. Tchaikovsky's elegant agility aligns beautifully with Shostakovich's spirited Second Jazz Suite . All that agility contrasts beautifully with Arvo Pärt's introspective Vater unser and Verhelst's Monumental Etude , in which time seems to stand still for a moment. Moreover, halfway through the concert, the wind section takes you to the mysterious and compelling world of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera , where lyricism and suspense converge.
