With the melodic richness, the orchestral colors, and the natural elegance of his music, Tchaikovsky set a new—and towering—standard for ballet music. Tchaikovsky's elegant agility aligns beautifully with Shostakovich's spirited Second Jazz Suite . All that agility contrasts beautifully with Arvo Pärt's introspective Vater unser and Verhelst's Monumental Etude , in which time seems to stand still for a moment. Moreover, halfway through the concert, the wind section takes you to the mysterious and compelling world of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera , where lyricism and suspense converge.
