With playing that critics describe as 'utterly honest', Rozenboom demonstrates on his 'well-tuned keyboard' how Bach worked. The pianist will also speak extensively about the music in Dutch.

Movements from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier

'The Well-Tuned Keyboard' – Bach gave this slightly provocative title to two volumes in which he reviewed all keys, in both minor and major. He wrote them to prove the usability of a different method of tuning. The earlier tuning used natural tones, which were only suitable for a single key. In the 'well-tempered' tuning, the distance between two notes is mathematically the same everywhere; consequently, all keys can be played without retuning the instrument. Bach wouldn't be Bach if he didn't provide that proof in 24 masterpieces…

Jan-Willem Rozenboom plays and tells stories

That he loves Bach is certain. Last year, pianist Jan-Willem Rozenboom released the Goldberg Variations on CD for the second time. 'He makes all facets of Bach's brilliant music sparkle,' Luister praised this recording. Even during his master's studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Bach was one of the composers on whom the focus lay. Rozenboom has performed three times in the Piano Nights series in the Main Hall. In addition to being a classical pianist, he is also a pianist, composer, and producer for Guus Meeuwis. He is bringing a section from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier to the Small Hall, where he will also speak extensively about the music.
