Het Plantagekoor Rossini's Le Petite Messe Solennelle

The Plantage Choir, conducted by Bert 't Hart, sings Rossini's 'Le Petite Messe Solennelle' in the English Church. The Burgundian-minded composer, after whom the dish Tournedos Rossini was also named, himself humorously called Le Petite Messe Solennelle 'the last of my sins'.

The Little Messe

The program features Le Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini (1792-1868), sung by the Plantation Choir and soloists. Despite the name ('little solemn mass'), it is a dramatic and imposing work. Its operatic character was highly unusual for church music, but not for Rossini, who had already become world-famous with his operas, including Il Barbiere di Siviglia . His work was considered the pinnacle of 'bel-canto' singing with ornamentation, in which the text was subordinate to the music. He wrote this mass only at the age of 71, when he had already resolutely stopped composing operas for over 30 years.
