String quintet with an unusual instrumentation
Les Arcs Ensemble presents a program featuring two works for string quintet. The role of the double bass is noteworthy: in Dvořák's String Quintet in E-flat, it takes the place of the usual second cello. This gives the work a darker, fuller sound character than you might be accustomed to.
Molina and Dvořák in one program
The program opens with two works by the Spanish-American composer Jorge Amado Molina: Rito and Díptico . Rhythm and layered structures take center stage. This is followed by Dvořák's broadly spun quintet, with melodic lines and an extensive musical build-up. Due to the double bass as a fifth voice, it sounds different from the original version.
