Music by the legendary jazz composer Duke Ellington, performed by a seven-piece ensemble led by Ruud Bergamin (saxophone, arrangements), featuring Marie van der Burg (vocals), Koos van der Hout (trumpet), Daniel Follmann (trombone), Nick van den Bos (piano), Vincent Kuiper (bass), and Victor de Boo (drums).
The club and the church
The 'Club' program explores music from his Cotton Club era (circa 1930), featuring some of the best-known pieces from his repertoire. The 'Church' program focuses on the sacred music from his Sacred Concerts (early 1960s), revealing another side of his extraordinary musical vision.
Duke Ellington
The composed, symphonic jazz of Duke Ellington (1899–1975) is regarded as a milestone in jazz history. His long-standing residency at New York's Cotton Club in the 1930s played a defining role in shaping his unmistakable musical style. Three decades later, Ellington presented a series of Sacred Concerts in churches across the United States, bringing that same distinctive voice to music inspired by spirituality and faith.
