The 28-year-old pianist Eric Lu called it a "dream come true" and thanked "all Chopin lovers around the world" when he won the prestigious Chopin Competition in Warsaw last year. The competition, held every five years in Frédéric Chopin's homeland, is seen as the gateway to the international concert stage. The jury praised Lu's performances of Chopin's Second Piano Concerto and the Polonaise Fantasy for "his maturity, subtlety, and excellent sense of phrasing."
Chopin, Brahms and Schubert
In addition to the two world-famous piano concertos and the many beloved nocturnes and waltzes, Frédéric Chopin also wrote countless sonatas and polonaises, which are not only technically challenging but also delicate and enchantingly beautiful. Initially, he wrote these works for himself as a traveling virtuoso; later, in Paris, primarily for his star pupils. During his solo debut in the Kleine Zaal, Eric Lu plays a sonata, a polonaise, and a ballad by Chopin, combining this with Brahms' Theme and Variations and Impromptus by Schubert that also appear on his latest album.
