Beethoven’s artistic development and French Romanticism

During this Cello Biënnale, all of Beethoven’s works for cello and piano will be performed, divided over 4 concerts. Marie-Elisabeth Hecker will take on the lion’s share together with her regular partner, master pianist Martin Helmchen. In this concert, they will play Beethoven’s first and last cello sonatas in the Alles van Beethoven series. These two sonatas allow you to follow the composer’s artistic development. From the early sonata, which is almost ‘piano-dominated’, to the later, more complex sonata, in which the cello and piano have become equal partners.

In addition to Beethoven’s Bei Männern welche Liebe fühlen, Emmanuelle Bertrand will play two works from the French Romantic period: Solitude by the until recently virtually unknown Rita Strohl and Saint-Saëns’s monumental Eerste sonate.

This concert is part of Alles van Beethoven.

This concert will be broadcast live by the NTR op NPO Klassiek
