The orchestra is delighted to welcome Andris Nelsons back to the stage. The Latvian conductor leads two major works, both of which build toward a timeless, heavenly vision. Mahler's lightest and airiest symphony, the Fourth , is also one of his most beloved. It has been in the Concertgebouw Orchestra's repertoire since 1904, conducted for the first time by the composer himself. Now we have the opportunity to experience Andris Nelsons's vision of Mahler's Fourth . In the final movement, the celebrated soprano Christiane Karg takes us to heaven, as seen through the eyes of a child.

Before the intermission, trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger takes us on a journey to paradise. Jörg Widmann's trumpet concerto "Towards Paradise" is a quest through the human spirit. The capricious musical journey leads through hectic, anxious, loving, and melancholic moments, gradually giving way to breathtaking vistas.
