Workshop facilitator
The workshop is led by Mameto Kaloyá, a non-binary, queer person from the Roma diaspora and born into the Candomblé tradition (Maroon communities and houses). Kaloyá holds the title Egbomi (which can be roughly translated as 'young priestess') in the Candomblé house of Redandá (Cipó-Guaçu, Brazil) and is a Caixeira do Divino priestess in the House of Nagô Nabioton in São Luis do Maranhão. From a young age, Kaloyá inherited various drumming and singing practices from elders such as Caixeiras da Casa Fanthi Ashanti and Mother Kabeka, the Xango Master Daniel Reverendo, Mother Gunzolande, and others.
About the Tulipa Association
Tulipa's Society Amsterdam and Teatro Munganga warmly welcome you to a series of workshops on traditional singing and drumming, and gatherings dedicated to sharing knowledge about Brazilian Candomblé and the tradition of priestesses.
Tulipa's Society, housed in Teatro Munganga, honors Zahar – a Vungira in the Brazilian Candomblé tradition. It is inspired by Sociedade das Tulipas, a sisterhood based at the Redandá Candomblé House in Cipó-Guaçú, São Paulo, which has been organizing charitable events since 1970 for hospitals treating wildfires and other causes.
