Traversing the Mist, a roaming multi-user XR experience

A surreal XR journey through a gay sauna

In Traversing the Mist , you step into the body of a young Taiwanese man and explore a surreal gay sauna. You move through corridors, rooms, and floors, while every layer of the labyrinth unfolds irreversibly behind you. The sauna-goers around you all wear the same face. Eventually, everything disappears into the mist.

6DoF multi-user XR technology

Director CHOU Tung-Yen and Very Theatre push the boundaries of real-time XR technology with this experience. Traversing the Mist is a 6DoF roaming multi-user experience: you move physically through a large space and meet other visitors in the same virtual world. The experience is the final installment of the Trilogy of Mist , following In the Mist (2021) and Gazing, in the Mist (2022).

Part of Radical Togetherness and WorldPride 2026

Traversing the Mist is part of Radical Togetherness , Podium Mozaiek's multidisciplinary program for Amsterdam Pride and WorldPride 2026. This program brings queer artists and communities from Haiti, Taiwan, and the Pacific into dialogue with Amsterdam. On July 17, there will be an artist talk with XR maker CHOU Tung-Yen in Studio 2 at Podium Mozaïek.

Awards and recognition

Traversing the Mist won the Grand Prize at the NewImages Festival 2024 and was part of the first Cannes Immersive competition in 2024. The world premiere took place at IDFA DocLab 2023. Are you interested? Reserve a time slot via the booking link.
