Beurs van Berlage guided tour
The Beurs van Berlage opened in 1903 and housed Amsterdam’s stock exchange. It gets its name from renowned Dutch architect Hendrik Berlage who was responsible for its design. Incorporating a range of traditional building styles, the Beurs is now considered the Netherland's most important example of 20th-century architecture.
Making a statement
As a predecessor to the architectural style known as "Amsterdam School", the building is a testament to the artisans who built it. According to Berlage, the 9 million in bricks were meant to represent the individual, and the resulting building represented society. For a building used by stockbrokers, it’s ironic that most of the artwork warns against capitalism.
On show
The Beurs is now often used for events, concerts, exhibitions and conferences. Guided tours can be arranged in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese by request.
