The Amsterdam Jewish history tour starts in the district where the first Jews arrived in the 17th century. The tour covers Jewish life in Amsterdam throughout the centuries. We illustrate general history with stories and documents of your guide Eva’s ancestors. The neighbourhoods we visit during this tour, are part of the Jewish Historical Quarter. The route includes, among others, the famous Waterlooplein flea market and Portuguese synagogue. If you wish, a visit to this impressive, authentic building can be added to the tour. The tour includes the Hollandsche Schouwburg WWII memorial and several other Holocaust memorial spots as well.

What makes this Jewish history tour a unique and unforgettable experience? To develop this tour, your guide Eva gathered family stories from Amsterdam’s city archives and family attics. Her own family stories turned out to be fascinating illustrations to the general history of Jews in Amsterdam. There’s a proper balance between long term history stories and World War II stories. Depending on your interests, the tour takes 2,5 hours minimum. In case you have a broader or deeper interest, please let us know and we can extend the tour to more hours.

About Amsterdam Odyssey

We, Hanneke and Eva, both born & raised Amsterdammers, are friends since we met at university. Eva is an anthropologist and teacher of social sciences. Hanneke is a film scholar and an art history teacher. After having worked as guides in several other contexts, we started our own private tour company in 2016. In 2018, Huibert and Irina have joined the team. Huibert is a designer, historian and author of several books on Amsterdam. Irina is a very experienced museum and family guide. We love to create customized tours beyond mass tourism, giving you a meaningful experience and an actual connection with Amsterdam.
