Proud to live in East or simply looking for an excuse to visit a different part of the city? For 24 hours only on Saturday 12 May, you’ll have the chance to discover Amsterdam Oost’s hidden delights. Join a workshop or take a peek behind the scenes at socially responsible businesses that are on a mission to make the world a better place. Here are five activities you shouldn’t miss out on.
Beer yoga on a green roof
Start your Saturday with a beer. On the roof of the Hotel Casa Amsterdam, Hopp will introduce you to beer yoga, the latest phenomenon fresh out of Berlin. It involves relaxing yoga poses carried out while holding a bottle of beer in your hand and a heavenly view over the city. The 400m2 roof garden is filled with crates of edible crops used in the dishes on the hotel’s menu. The crops are grown sustainably by GrownDownTown in a nursery staffed by people recovering from addiction. From 15.00 - 20.00 you can enjoy a range of special beers and comfort foods. Besides: take part in exciting beer activities, give your beard a revamp or even get a real tattoo.

Kizomba dancing and eco food
Point your bike in the direction of Oosterpark for a dance workshop in Jungle Amsterdam, a cultural centre that offers work to Amsterdammers looking to get a foothold in the labour market. Move your body to kizomba, a sensual dance and style of music popular in Angola in the 80s. Or shake your booty to Urban Kiz, an upbeat mix of kizomba, R&B and dance. After you’ve worked up an appetite, treat yourself to a tasty organic vegetarian snack provided by Farmed Today, an initiative that produces locally and fairly, with 100% transparency guaranteed.

Learn the art of fermentation
Spend an afternoon on a deep-dive into the bubbling world of fermentation. At delicatessen and pickling emporium Thull’s, close to Middenweg, you will learn the best techniques for preserving food, from pickles, sauerkraut, and kimchi to fermented drinks such as kefir and kombucha. Following the workshop, you’ll have mastered the art of preserving all sorts of seasonal products, which not only taste great, but also help reduce food waste. Win-win!
Thull’s, Pretoriusstraat 69
Indulge your nose at the Amsterdam Soap Factory
Treat yourself to a heavenly scented soap, that’s gentle on your skin, wallet and the planet. During this workshop at the Amsterdamsche Zeepfabriek (Amsterdam Soap Factory) you’ll learn the traditional art of making soap and organic essential oils, and for a small contribution you can take a small bottle of scented oil home with you. You’ll get the chance to look behind the scenes in the workshop and shop. This socially responsible business uses only natural ingredients, like hemp seed oil, and provides, among other things, work experience for people with psychological issues.
