We've been there and we're still here
Over the past year, queer theatre maker Lou Mertens has noticed that the world around them is hardening. Global queer history is being erased or questioned bit by bit. In other countries, the rights of queer and trans people are being restricted even to the toilet, and in the Netherlands, acceptance rates are declining, while violence and discrimination against queer and trans people are increasing. How is it that a majority seems to accept this? When we, queer people, have always been here? How is it that we forget these stories?
Drawing hope from the past
In this multidisciplinary performance, Lou attempts to draw hope from the past. Along with four other theatre makers, they challenge current reality. The makers bring together often-forgotten stories of queer heroes from history, including those of Albert Cashier, Virginia Woolf, Abu Nuwas, and Catullus. Stories that prove we've always been here, from long before Christ to the present. Stories from which we might learn how to defy the current trend of hatred and resistance. Stories to turn the tide. Because we were already here, we're still here, and we won't go away.
